Facebook Pet Peeve #1: getting invites to play legends, harry potter, farmville, etc.

Facebook Pet Peeve #2: passive aggressive posts as facebook status’

A majority of us have facebook. A majority of us do not know how to use our facebook.

Facebook has become the top dog in the social media networking craze that has taken our world by storm. If you don’t have a facebook yet (not old enough, parents won’t let you- which obey them!) it won’t be long until you do. With over 800 million daily users, it surpasses any other social media networking site. Most individuals spend at least 23min per visit to facebook. So if you check your facebook 5 times per day, you are spending approximately 1 hour and 15 min per day online. That’s quite a chunk of time! And if we are really being honest with ourselves, we probably spend even more time on it than that.

So with all this time we are spending on facebook, Internet or other social media websites, it got me thinking about two things: 1. Are we spending that much time a day with God? 2. Are we using facebook in a way that is God-honoring?

How many people do we have in our friends list who don’t know Jesus Christ as their personal savior? And how many of those people know that we are believers as well. If we are bashing other people on our facebook status’ or walls, are we really showing people the love of Christ? We have an opportunity to share Christ everyday with our friends on facebook. What if every Christian posted encouraging verses, or wrote encouraging things on each others walls? People would begin to take notice!

Scripture tells us in Ephesians chapter 5 to walk wisely and not unwise, to make the best use of our time because the days are evil. If we are spending hours a day on facebook, are we really making the best use of our time? Are we spending more time on facebook then we are with our face buried deep into God’s book? In order for us to be mini-Christ who are sharing truth and encouragement with others, we must be spending time reading God’s word so we may be fulfilled and encouraged.

Let’s challenge ourselves. This week try spending less time on facebook or other social media sites and more time in God’s word. Also, when you are on facebook, use at as a time for encouraging and building up one another, as well being an example to our friends and show them the love of Christ!
