There was once a time in my life when I was a middle schooler.

This time was filled with….well…I’m not really sure. You see for some reason my middle school years have become more of a blur to me than a solid image. To be quite honest there are not many things I remember from my time as a middle school student.

I remember a few of the many times in which I got in trouble for being a punk. I remember our family vacations, listening to ska music, reading the Outsiders, my 2 week long relationship with the girl I liked, some of the fun things I did with my friends, and a few other moments scattered throughout.

I wish that, that wasn’t the case. I wish that I could think back upon my middle school years and remember some of the things that I was taught in my small group or by the pastor. I mean I can think of only one significant moment in my spiritual life that occurred during that time.

It was at the end of my 8th grade year at a camp and the “fire” from that moment was quickly put out by my entry into high school and my desire to make friends and not feel like such a loner.

You see though during my time as a middle school student and even throughout high school I knew something was missing or more like I was missing out on something. That all my running around and immaturity and getting in trouble was not what life was about. I knew there were more meaningful things for me in middle school and I wish I would have done some more meaningful things.

I know now and I knew then that what was missing from my life was a meaningful, active, growing relationship with Christ.

1 Timothy 4:7-8
“Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.”

Lets not spend our time chasing things that lead to nothing. The myths that if you’re pretty enough, athletic enough, smart enough that you will be just fine. The myth that our safety and identity is found in ourselves, our things, and our friends. The myths that cause us to lose sight and understanding that our identity, our refuge, our hope, and our life is found in God.

You can work out all you want but some day you will be weak and your body will fail you. You can spend all the time you want on making yourself pretty but one day you will be wrinkle-filled and old. These “silly myths” do not endure. We need to spend our time on things that matter, the things that truly last and endure through all things.

My hope and desire for you students is that you will not let your time in middle school be a blur. Instead, I hope that your time in middle school is a time of growth. That we together would strive to learn God’s Word. That we would strive together to pursue Christ. That we would strive together to humbly grow in our relationship with Christ. That we would pray for each other and for our world. That we would serve one another and our world. That we would give God our everything and that all things we do would be to bring Him glory.

Listening to: Chris Tomlin “Awakening”

Head to iTunes, buy this song for 99 cents, let the words sink in as you spend time reading 1 Timothy 4:6-16.

We are officially in the first week of the month of September…. Which means one thing:

BACK TO SCHOOL!!

That thought could bring you joy or bring you pain, depending on your outlook on school… Back when I was in school I would dread it when September came around. One thing that I could count on was that I never knew what to expect as I started back up - - there was always new and interesting things to come throughout the year, and that kept me excited.

For whatever reason; today I have been constantly hearing a song playing over and over and over in my head. The song is called “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon. I heard it today on my way to work and its stuck with me throughout the day. There is a part in the song when the singer says:

“I’ve been roaming around, I was looking down at all I see
Painted faces fill the places I can’t reach
You know that I could use somebody
You know that I could use somebody”

Although I’m not the type of weirdo who thinks every song means something that it clearly doesn’t, I have to say, this one stuck with me today as I thought about the Student Ministry group at Royal Oak.

You see, there’s this ever-mysterious verse in Ephesians that says “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Eph 2:10) that always makes me feel a little eery…….. God … prepared .. good .. works .. for .. me ??? Really?

As I think about this song, right now I am envisioning the omnipresent God roaming around looking down at our cities - royal oak, berkley, birmingham, clawson, etc., etc., etc. He’s looking down at the churches here, the restaurants, and the schools - - and he’s saying “YOU KNOW THAT I COULD USE SOMEBODY” in a deep, husky, Darth Vader-ish voice… (jk) But for real, I believe that God has sought and found good works for us to do to make a difference in the lives of others - He just wants to USE somebody!

So my encouragement to you, students, is to get out of your own way!

Let God clear your path, and walk you along that path towards His will. He wants YOU to make a difference, so that the glory goes to Him. Try to make this year different and better than any school year prior as you seek to be used by the Creator.

Kyle D.

I envy teenagers…. kind of

The last 5 or so years I have been getting used to working the 40 hour a week schedule, without having summers or vacation or anything… When I was in grade school, we always were given 3 to 4 months off for summer vacation, and the same is true for many students these days. What a life!! Teenagers during the summer get to wake up at noon, eat cereal for an hour, watch cartoons, play outside, take another nap, and then play hours of video games all before dinner time! And then the next day, the cycle repeats itself…

I remember how awesome summer vacation used to be - up until about 2 months into the vacation, and then I’d get bored with doing the same thing every stinkin’ day. And then I would just look for new things to do so that I wouldn’t take my “freedom” for granted…

I know that many students deal with this - they can’t wait for summer, but once summer arrives… they’re bored!!! Boredom is something I hate to see, so I have provided a list of several things that a teenager can do to keep things exciting in life, enjoy:

- Eat breakfast for dinner

- Swim in a pool with your clothes on

- Buy a notebook. Start writing down all the important events that have occurred in your life to date… You’ll appreciate this later in life.

- If you were a song, what song would define you? Go into your I-Tunes and compile an 18 song CD that you would use to define yourself… And then burn three copies: one for your best friend, one for your parents, and one to save for yourself.

- Have a couple friends over and close the blinds in your house… Make popcorn, and watch a scary movie

- If you’re guy, have a “man-cathlon”.. Which means you get some guys together and play all sorts of games and record who wins.. The winner gets an award. The games could be: Horseshoes, Jarts, P.I.G., SKATE, putt-putt golf, etc. Be creative and be competitive : )

- pick up a new hobby… be passionate about it… tell everyone about it…

- pick up a new hobby… don’t tell anyone - make it your secret.

- E-mail a friend you haven’t talked to in a while.

- Volunteer for a day at a homeless shelter or nursing home. Look at everyone you encounter through the eyes of Jesus.

- Read a new book each month. Ask your pastor to recommend one.

- Go to the mall. While you’re there, buy some candy and share it with your siblings.

- Read Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in one full weekend… Try to figure out who this Jesus character was…

- Start taking pictures of awesome things you see..

- When its late at night, and no one is outside… Go into your backyard and talk to God. Tell him what’s going on, and ask him for advice…

- Figure out how to start your own website or a blog about your life! In this site or blog, put links of all the cool things you like to do so others can get to know you…

- AND LAST, ATTEND A WOODSIDE OF ROYAL OAK EVENT!! MIDDLE SCHOOL ON WEDNESDAYS, HIGH SCHOOL ON SUNDAYS!! GET TO KNOW KYLE AND KRISTIN!

Hello Parents and Students of Oasis!!

Thank you for visiting our site! We want you to be able to use this site as an opportunity to catch up on the most recent happenings for students at the Royal Oak Woodside Campus! I strongly believe that God DOES care about the day to day things that go on in the lives of teenagers as well as their parents, and we want to be able to connect with you and help you realize your role in God’s story… Our way of connecting to the students is through our weekly small groups on Wednesday Nights. We hang out, listen to great music, and engage in a lesson that is relevant to the students that attend. We encourage them to bring friends, family, or neighbors in order to spread the message of Christ. Please feel free to navigate the site, and if you have a question, please e-mail me here.

Thank you,
